Many experienced yachtsmen regard the Desolation Sound area as not only the most beautiful and varied cruising areas in British Columbia, but equal to, if not better than, any other area in the world. This coastal haven of majestic fiords, towering 7,000 ft. peaks, cascading waterfalls, and pristine lakes provides countless well protected anchorages scattered throughout its spectacular cruising grounds.

The almost complete absence of development or settlement results in a superlative "wilderness" feeling. This quality, which led Captain Vancouver to name the area "Desolation Sound", is the quality that many people today wish to experience. Warm summer temperatures and the meeting of the tides jointly cause the Comox-Desolation Sound region to enjoy the mildest climate, richest sea life, and warmest water on the British Columbia coast.

Toba Inlet, penetrating 27 miles into the BC Coast Mountains north of Desolation Sound, can provide the inquisitive yachtsman with a truly awesome cruising experience. This remote inlet is seldom visited because it is virtually devoid of marinas, settlements, parks or well protected anchorages. This may seem daunting to cruisers, so what better way to experience Toba Inlet than with a Flotilla and an experienced team leader.

We feel the best time to visit Toba Inlet is in the late spring when the snow-melt runoff is the greatest. There are at least a dozen huge waterfalls tumbling down the sides of Toba Inlet at this time of year, some so forcefull they spew water out into the Inlet so you can see it from miles away. Archibald Menzies, officer to George Vancouver, wrote of Toba, "On each side were high steep mountains covered towards their summits with snow which was now dissolving and producing a number of wild torrents and beautiful cascades".
