What is a Flotilla anyway? A Flotilla is a group of yachts travelling together with a lead boat guiding the group to various locations. Flotilla cruising vacations offer the best of all worlds when it comes to sailing and power boating - the ultimate balance of independence, a great social scene, and support whenever you need it. It is a relaxed, friendly and fun way to enjoy everything that bareboating has to offer but with the addition of an experienced lead crew nearby.
Why join a Flotilla? Aren't all sailors supposed to be self sufficient and independent? There are many ways to enjoy a cruising experience and this is one of them. It is a concept that also works well for both experienced and not so experienced charterers. Experienced sailors often choose to go with a Flotilla because of the social advantage in sailing in a group. Flotilla sailing offers the excellent combination of privacy and flexibility of chartering your own yacht with the comfort of having on hand, when needed, the assistance of a Flotilla crew.
For many, the social element of meeting up with like-minded crews from other yachts in the Flotilla after a good day's sail, in a scenic anchorage, is both reassuring and fun. Joining a Flotilla is also a great way to get to know a new cruising ground and/or a new or larger boat.
Flotilla sailing is also ideal for those with limited sailing experience. However, at least one person on board has to be experienced with a comparable size and type of boat. The less experienced sailors get a sense of security as well as an opportunity to learn more ~ the more experienced skippers enjoy joining a Flotilla for the extra help from other, not as experienced but contributing, sailors on their boat. With more than one experienced sailor on board, the pressure and responsibilities are shared.
With a Flotilla, team leaders recommend and plan for the best anchorages, harbours and places to visit. They try to incorporate something for everyone - good sailing, on shore exploration, 'happy hour', good food, and down time. Itineraries are always flexible and allow as much freedom as you like, with plenty of independent sailing time for you to explore the area.
The Flotilla yachts meet up at the agreed destinations at the end of the day for barbeques, pot lucks and other social events. These are not compulsory but most find they are not to be missed. Skippers meet daily to tweak the daily plan keeping in mind weather forecasts, distances, and exciting new opportunities that sometimes pop up.
Another important aspect for the success of the Flotilla are the team leaders. An experienced team leader can add extra confidence while navigating and guiding the group through rock strewn, unfamiliar waters. Trip leaders take great personal pride and pleasure in sharing and creating memorable sailing experiences.
The basic ingredients for a great sailing holiday are a great climate, beautiful islands, nice people, lots of history, good food and great company. For the novice sailor or the salty dog, our Flotillas' guests experience memories that last a lifetime. When we think back on all the Flotillas we have organized one prominent memory comes to mind. That is all the fun we had making new friends ~ friends we still have many years later.
